Boxing is a way of life in the Ortega family. Arturo (Jimmy Smits) boxed professionally in his early twenties but, after a devastating defeat, was forced to give it up. However, as his sons have grown, they have come to love boxing themselves. As Arturo manages their fledgling careers, each develops their own unique relationship with their father. The oldest, Jimmy (Clifton Collins Jr.), feels that his father favors his younger brothers. The middle child, Sonny (Jon Seda), a better boxer than Jimmy, tends to be more independent and freethinking. Johnny (Ernesto Hernandez) is the youngest, but clearly has the best chance for a future title. He is also the most devoted to his father. Conflicts in each relationship force Arturo to examine himself and his place as both manager and father. PRICE OF GLORY is strongest as it portrays the stormy relationship between Sonny and Arturo. Throw in some wonderful Latin music and fine performances by Smits and Seda, and you get a movie worth the price of admission.

Arturo struggles as he tries to be both father to his sons and their boxing manager. He tends to be most comfortable as their manager first, their father second. This creates a wedge between Arturo and the two eldest children as they seek to make their own decisions in life. Although he loves his sons deeply, his deep desire for them to succeed as boxers hides that love. But even in the midst of conflict and strife, the family remains fiercely loyal to one another. The familys faith is also portrayed positively as they are shown in prayer before boxing. Since the films plot surrounds boxing, several matches are shown, with the customary boxing match violence. However, the camera occasionally gets in close and reveals the vicious nature of the sport. One scene implies some cocaine use, but it is portrayed in a negative light. Foul language is the most prominent issue with 18 moderate crudities, 9 obscenities and seven regular profanities. Unfortunately, this persistent language delivers a knockout punch to PRICE OF GLORY.
