Return To Me

MPAA Rating: PG

This rather predictable feel good, romantic comedy is nonetheless enjoyable and for a change, features normal, decent folks. The plot may be a bit far fetched, but interesting. Bob Rueland (David Duchovny), a happily married young architect lives in a large city. But when his wife is killed in an auto accident, her heart is transplanted into another attractive young woman named Grace Briggs (Minnie Driver). Grace works as a waitress in an Irish/Italian restaurant along with her caring grandfather, Marty (Carroll OConnor), and some of his long time buddies. By coincidence, a friend invites Bob to have dinner at the restaurant. When she waits on his table, Davids immediately attracted to Grace, unaware of her heart transplant. Watching their romance develop provides gentle humor and some plot twists along the way add to the films appeal. Graces best friend, Megan (Bonnie Hunt), and her family provide additional moments of pathos and humor. RETURN TO ME will be popular as a date movie and romantic couples should provide a good response at the box office.

It is very refreshing to view a movie with down-to-earth, normal characters who most viewers can relate to. A sensitive, loving husband, Bob suffers greatly when his wife dies. And Grace is a cheerful, grateful person who is close to her grandfather. Marty loves his granddaughter dearly, but even more encouraging, hes a devout Catholic who prays for Grace at his church. He even tells David that God had a special reason for placing Bobs wifes heart in Grace. He also encourages Grace to vacation and pray in Rome where "God will hear you better". Undoubtedly to avoid a G rating, some scenes have Megans children comically repeat indecent words which her husband blurts out. And Megans husband is not bashful in suggesting sex to her. RETURN TO ME is another film which would be acceptable and uplifting if the all-too-common inclusion of foul language had been left out.
