In this mostly lackluster offering, the deep space search-and-rescue crew of the emergency medical ship 'Nightingale' receive a distress call from a distant galaxy. When the captain dies in the dimension jump, newcomer Nick Vanzant (James Spader) is forced to take over. After picking up the stranger in distress, they learn he is not who he claimed in his call. They also find a strange, alien substance that intrigues crew member Yerzy Penalosa (Lou Diamond Phillips). The crew finds that the substance, once put into a quarantined area, oddly affects not only Yerzy, but also the stranger, Troy Larson (Peter Facinelli). As the ship is caught by the pull of a star about to explode, the rest of the crew begins to suspect that something's wrong with Troy, but it may already be too late. The film moves slowly and action sequences are few and far between. While it may have a decent opening weekend, SUPERNOVA will not cause a box office explosion.

Throughout the film, memories of Carl Sagan and his naturalistic philosophies are brought to mind as Troy delivers a monologue on the make-up and origins of human life. In his altered state, Troy believes that all people come from stardust, and stars die so more life can be created. Troy also says that the only sin in life is the sin of regret, which leads him to do things simply because they feel good. He tells this to a woman, hoping to have sex with her. Sexual content, along with some regular profanity account for the film's negative rating. Characters engage in sexual activity four times, three of them shown, although only brief glimpses from the shoulders up. Only once is there any nudity in a sex scene, a quick glimpse of male rear nudity. In another scene, a female takes off her shirt, briefly exposing her breasts. Sexual content and nudity, profanity and naturalistic philosophies in this second-rate film make SUPERNOVA a super disappointment.
