Mega-star Harrison Ford plays Dutch Van Den Broeck, an internal affairs investigator for the Washington, D.C. police department. In the midst of uncovering a dirty cop taking bribes from criminals, Dutch pays no attention to news bulletins about a plane crashing on its way to Miami. Likewise, Congresswoman Kay Chandler (Kristin Scott Thomas) is too busy with her re-election campaign to hear the news. When Dutch discovers via voice mail that his wife left on an unexpected "business" trip to Miami, his investigative instincts kick into action. He then feels compelled to seek out Kay and report the shocking news that Dutchs wife, under an assumed name, was Kays husbands traveling companion. Kay feels strongly that this ugly affair with a tragic ending should be ignored to save her campaign and to protect her 15-year-old daughter. But Dutch is like a dog with a bone, determined to learn all he can about his wifes liaison. The romance that develops between stoic Kay and intense Dutch has no spark and little warmth. Overall, RANDOM HEARTS will disappoint movie fans as it plods along for two very long hours.
Dutchs tenacity in building a case against a policeman almost costs him his job and his life. He physically assaults the suspect, who fights back with kicks and punches to Dutchs stomach. Later a gunman follows Dutch and almost kills him. These two scenes, plus a view of a bloody corpse, are the films only violence. A brief view of the crash scene does not focus on the carnage. One brief obscured sex scene follows some passionate kissing and groping as Dutch and Kay give in to their feelings. There is no nudity, but he begins undressing her. Sensuous tango dancers performing in a Miami nightclub serve no purpose except to titillate. Along with this come 10 obscenities and nine regular profanities. Kay says the only f-word, and Dutch tells her she shouldnt use it because she obviously was repulsed by it. Dutch willingly risks his life as an investigator and truly cared about his wife. Kay was a faithful wife and has a strong relationship with her daughter. Unfortunately, RANDOM HEARTS contains unnecessary foul language and a sex scene between two unmarried adults.
