Thin Line Between Love and Hate, A

MPAA Rating: R

A THIN LINE is the Fatal Attraction film of the year. Combining hip-hop nightlife scenes with morning after revelations tends to make this movie one with a message. Darnell (Bobby Brown), a young partner in the Chocolate City nightclub, finds out the hard way it is not wise to have lots of women. He and his friend T's main ambition is to bed pretty women. Along comes femme fatale, Brandi Web (Lyn Whitfield), and T bets Darnell that he can't bed Brandi because she is so rich and beautiful. But Darnell proves him wrong and that's when the trouble starts. For Darnell, it was just a conquest, but for Brandi, it was "love." His rejection of her causes Brandi to try to kill Darnell, who learns being true to one woman is more important that being "the man" of many conquests. But it's too late to win viewers' sympathy. Most will feel Darnell deserves whatever malady befalls him in this boring, silly film.

Watching Darnell and listening to his degrading talk of women is excruciating. With almost 200 obscenities and many crudities, this movie soaks viewers in filth. Constant references to sex and the importance of getting women into bed to qualify as a "real" man, become tiresome and disgusting. One graphic bedroom sex scene includes breast nudity and sex is implied several other times. Sexual dancing, complete with pelvic thrusts, passionate kissing and very suggestive caressing are repugnant. This film has it all, right down to the very last moment when three people crash and fall out of a second story window and land in a pool. Other acts of violence include a girl slammed against a wall, gun threats, a near electrocution and fighting. Most of these are related to Brandi's attempts to kill Darnell and sometimes become excessive. A THIN LINE crosses the line of good taste. Avoid it.[
