This really clever, funny comedy is based on the Rocky and Bullwinkle TV cartoon show and stars the popular Brandon Fraser as Dudley-Do Right, a likable, bumbling Canadian Mountie. Dudley is stationed at the sleepy little Canadian town of Semi-Happy Valley where nothing happens until the dastardly Snidely Whiplash (Alfred Molina) "salts " the local streams with gold nuggets. This sets off a huge gold rush to the small town which Snidely exploits to build an empire with commercial enterprises of all kinds. Even the local Indians get in the act with lavish outdoor Las Vegas style shows. In his own comically inept way, Dudley tries to stop Snidleys nefarious activities, and not only loses out to him but temporarily loses his winsome girlfriend, Nell (Sarah Parker), to Snidely. But true blue Dudley fights back with the help of his new found friend, a down and out prospector played by Eric Idle. This action packed comedy is full of hilarious slapstick antics and clever sophisticated comedy routines. It moves so fast, you have to pay close attention or miss some of the subtle humor. Teens and adults are more likely to go for it than children, but the kids will particularly enjoy the brief, fun "Fractured Fairy Tale" cartoon which precedes the main show.

This comedy, with very few questionable elements, comes close to deserving a G rating. Virtually none of the humor is crude or sexually suggestive, although there is one comical reference to Dudley as Studley Dudley. It is also devoid of crude sexual content, nudity and profanity. Only three mild obscenities mar the dialogue and they are undoubtedly included to avoid a G rating. Its slapstick antics include lots of moderately violent action including Dudley being hit on the head by loose floorboards, as well as being hit in the stomach and head with rocks and sticks. And the film comes to a grand finale as Snidely leads a massive military force against Dudley and his Indian friends. A barrage of artillery and fireworks shots are fired, but only minor comical injuries are incurred. Are far as PG comedies go these days, this is one of the more decent ones.
