How does love endure over time when all of our imperfections get in the way? That is the central theme of ILLUMINATA and also the theme of Tuccios (JohnTurturro) play of the same name. Tuccio is the playwright for a struggling repertory company in New York City around 1900. He has nearly finished writing Illuminata for the woman he loves, Rachel (Katherine Borowitz), but the theater owners will not allow him to stage it. However, Tuccio uses a freak accident during a performance of another play to suggest that the unfinished Illuminata should be the replacement, so they put it on that very night. The renowned theater critic Bevalaqua (Christopher Walken) is present, yet in his review the next day, he criticizes Illuminata to no end. So the company sets out to get the play another showing in its final form. In doing this, each character illustrates an example of how we fail, yet love endures. ILLUMINATA is a creative film with an amazing score that effectively shows the failings of humanity in their relationships. However, it is often hard to follow, and because of its filming style, people will probably not flock to see it.
ILLUMINATA does a tremendous job of showing the imperfections of people. It is an honest and often comical representation of the silly and downright dumb things people do in their relationships with others. But it just uses far too much sexual content to accomplish this purpose. Several references to sex and unconventional sex are made throughout the film. Several scenes contain female breast nudity, including three scenes that feature some kind of unconventional sex. In one graphic scene, a woman is shown stimulating a man with her hand under a table although no genitals are seen. Foul language is also prevalent with 9 f-words and 6 moderate crudities. All of this sexual content and language overpower the unique storytelling and admirable theme of love enduring through all kinds of troubles.
