Jerry Maguire (Tom Cruise) is a man working for everyone else. As a top agent at Sports Management International, he handles the careers of 75 top athletes. However, on an off night he decides to write a mission statement to his company which focuses on real caring for fewer clients. In his statement he says that quality, rather than quantity, should be the focus. Two weeks later Jerry's world comes crashing down, as he is fired and he and his fiancee, Avery Bishop (Kelly Preston), split up. Jerry is left with just one client on his side, Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding, Jr.), along with 26-year-old single mother Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), who willingly leaves her accountancy position at SMI for a very uncertain future with her new boss. As Jerry begins to work with Dorothy he learns how to truly relate to other people and establish real friendships. The messages in JERRY MAGUIRE are powerful ones that the viewer is unlikely to forget. For a change, devotion, loyalty, love and marriage win out, and this film should be an audience pleaser.
Unfortunately, Jerry Maguire is also riddled with crude words, obscenities and profanities. Several times children repeat the bad language they hear from Jerry and Rod. Although these scenes are humorous and true to life, they would have been better left out. Rear male nudity is present in a locker room scene, and there is one explicit love scene between Jerry and Avery, featuring some female side breast and rear nudity and very sexually suggestive dialogue. Jerry does redeem himself in his relationships, and the message of honest and stick-to-it friendships will leave audiences empowered and encouraged about the heart of mankind. It's a shame that some offensive material spoils an otherwise meaningful film.
