Best friends since high school, Romy White (Mira Sorvino) and Michele Weinberger (Lisa Kudrow) are still together as roommates in southern California 10 years later. News of an upcoming high school reunion in their hometown of Tucson, Arizona, inspires flashbacks to their teen years, recalling moments when they were treated badly by their more popular classmates. In spite of these unpleasant memories they plan to attend the reunion anyway. Then they contemplate their current status and realize they don't have much to brag about Romy is an auto dealership cashier, Michele is unemployed, and neither of them has a boyfriend. Since they moved to California several years earlier, they decide to make up an impressive life history that has the pair inventing "Post-it Notes." En route to Tucson, however, Romy and Michele have a falling-out over the details centering on who masterminded their "creation" and try to avoid each other at the reunion. What they can't avoid is classmate Heather Mooney (Janeane Garofalo), a former high school rebel who knows about their real lives. The comedy has some laughs, but they often come at the expense of the heroines, who aren't the brightest young women you'll ever come across. Viewers who graduated from high school in the 1980s may appreciate this film's "nostalgia."

There's nothing horribly objectionable about this comedy besides its language and a few sexually suggestive elements. It seems like Romy and Michele open every other sentence with either the word "God" or the phrase "Oh my God," resulting in 28 regular and 39 exclamatory profanities. When Romy wants to borrow a mechanic's car, he asks her to talk like they're having sex so his buddies can overhear them. Heather's surly personality accounts for most of the film's 22 obscenities. Romy and Michele frequently wear low-cut outfits, and in one scene Michele loses her shirt and is shown in a bra. In a high school flashback, two boys look at each other in a way that implies homosexuality. Romy and Michele's High School Reunion is another case of Hollywood spoiling a movie by fouling up the language.
