Celine (Cameron Diaz), a beautiful, bored rich girl is kidnapped by Robert (Ewan McGregor), a janitor fired by her billionaire father (Ian Holm). Amused by Robert's bungling efforts to demand ransom, she begins coaching him. Meanwhile, up in heaven Chief Angel Gabriel has sent two of his top angels, O'Reilly and Jackson (Holly Hunter and Delroy Lindo) on an impossible mission. Unless they can make Robert and Celine fall in love, they will not be allowed to return to heaven. The two angels work very hard to make sure Robert and Celine remain in hiding so they will have time to fall in love. This seems unlikely since the janitor is a dreamer who longs to write cheap romance novels, and the heiress is a tough, cold-hearted woman whose hobby is shooting apples off the head of her butler. The bizarre plot, obnoxious angels, and warped humor make this a film most will avoid.
Celine's affinity for guns is dangerous. Her dentist boyfriend allows her to shoot an apple off his head to prove his love, and suffers a serious head injury. Celine takes great delight in robbing a bank, being kidnapped, and tormenting her father. She even cuts a vein in her arm, drains some blood, and sends it to him. Gentle Robert learns to fight back in self-defense, engaging in some head butts and kicks to stomachs. The angels stage Celine's near-death so Robert will have to save her and win her heart. They also talk tough, play poker, fight off attackers and suffer brutal injuries that appear to leave them dead. One of the five f-words in the dialogue is spoken by an angel. Moviegoers should be warned that this "romantic comedy" starts out funny, but quickly deteriorates into a violent, pointless ridicule of God's use of angels.
