The Walt Disney organization sends a team of astronauts to Mars in this slapstick comedy for kids. But one of the astronauts is a wacky computer specialist named Fred Randall who almost destroys the mission single handedly. Fred is played by popular comic Harland Williams, and, even before blast off, Fred wreaks havoc in the isolation and centrifugal force tests. And, once in space, Fred's comical mishaps continue to cause considerable concern. His roommate is a cute chimpanzee and he falls in love with a female astronaut (Jessica Lundy) which adds to the fun. Once on Mars, the question is whether Fred or the weather is the greatest threat to returning safely. There's no doubt that Harland Williams is a great comic and the kids attending the movie screening laughed a lot and seemed to enjoy the show.

The theme of ROCKETMAN is wholesome enough and it's almost free of sexually suggestive humor, although Fred makes a misunderstood remark about sleeping with the female astronaut aboard the spacecraft. And a few mild and moderate crudities are spoken along with a few slang words with sexual connotations. Some humorous, but crude, incidents are developed around laxatives and passing gas and a man is accidentally kicked in the groin, a standard joke in many films these days. Some standard slapstick violence is also present including two men being hit on the head with flying objects and a man in a wheelchair being hit and turned over. But some positive elements are also displayed when Fred and the spaceship commander risk their lives to save others. The ROCKETMAN is one of Disney's more decent comedies, but it would have been better if the questionable elements had not gotten on board. And those boycotting Disney will want to avoid it.
