U. S. Senator McGlory (J.O. Sanders) thinks it will help him win reelection if he can prove he has his roots in reputable ancestors in Ireland. So he sends his aid, Marcy Tizard (Janeane Garofalo), to a small village in Ireland to find any trace of them. But she has very little luck, partially because she arrives right in the middle of an annual Matchmaking Festival. Single men and women have crowded into town to find mates and the locals think she should find one also. She resists vigorously, but finds herself drawn to Sean (David O'Hara), a likeable middle aged journalist who is separated from his wife. They have their comical as well as poignant interactions while everyone around them is having a grand time, spending most of it in the local pubs drinking, singing and dancing. This romantic comedy has a promising story line, but seems to fall rather flat in entertainment appeal. However, the Irish coastal scenery is beautiful and will fascinate those who have never been to Ireland.

This perfectly good story is virtually destroyed by the blatant, irritating use of foul language from beginning to end. F-words, in particular, are spewed out so freely both by Irishmen and Americans that they seem to constitute most of their vocabulary. Viewers are assaulted by at least 33 obscenities, 13 profanities and numerous other crudities. And the Irish indulge in lots of beer and whiskey drinking in pubs. Sexual content is held to a minimum, but in one scene Marcy sneaks into Sean's hotel room and they are seen falling down on the bed together. Senator McGlory's campaign manager is crude and unscrupulous and decides to come up with some fake Irish ancestors for the senator. But, to their credit, both Marcy and the Senator eventually refuse to go along with this deception. When will it dawn on filmmakers that audiences don't want movies trashed up with unrelenting gutter language?
