Sophie (Gia Carides) is a "romance novelist," a spinner of smutty pulp fiction designed to provoke animal passions and indulge readers in their lusty pursuits. Then she meets Eddie (Anthony LaPaglia), a high-society jeweler, and a man who seems to have stepped right out of her illicit imagination. To win him, Sophie hides her polio-stricken leg by faking that it was broken in a skiing accident. Eddie on the other hand, hides the shady side of his business from her. He steals antique jewelry and sells it on the black market. With the cops on Eddie's trail, his fianc threatening to leave him, and Sophie wondering if he will ever accept her handicap, the two seem to face insurmountable obstacles. But in the midst of all the deception, the two find that their love is truer than their circumstances. Adults who enjoy smutty novels, sex, and nudity will be stimulated by this on-screen harlequin.

Viewers become fly-on-the-wall voyeurs as they watch sex scenes played out before their eyes. Scene after scene of Sophie's romance novels are depicted in detail with all the entailing moaning and groaning. Female breast nudity and male rear nudity seem to be a favorite as the filmmakers capture it with cinematographic excellence. Sexually suggestive dialogue and action also take center stage as many references to sex crop up and female characters appear in revealing lingerie and outfits. Adultery is also extolled as the audience is encouraged to cheer when the single Sophie finally gets her man and has wild sex with Eddie, who has just left his bride at the altar. Viewers who believe sex is a special act within the confines of a loving marriage will be sickened by the perverse treatment given it in this film.
