The children of New York are dying. A horrible new disease has invaded Manhattan Island and is attacking the communities' youth. In a last-ditch effort, Dr. Peter Mann (Jeremy Northam) of the Center for Disease Control enlists the help of brilliant scientist Dr. Susan Tyler (Mira Sorvino), a specialist in insects. Because the carriers of the disease, roaches, cannot be exterminated with chemicals, Dr. Tyler genetically engineers a new insect, a cross between a praying mantis and a termite. The result is a highly predatory creature who quickly kills all the roaches, and the disease. Drs. Mann and Tyler are revered as heroes. Several years later, people begin disappearing mysteriously, and Dr. Tyler learns the gruesome truth. The species she created has experienced a highly accelerated breeding process and has mutated a million years' worth in just a short time. Now the insects are coming out of the sewers and subways to feed on humans, and Dr. Tyler may be the only one who can stop them -- if she survives. Mimic will quench the thirst of many horror film buffs, but won't thrill them. The movie mostly relies on gore and special effects to impress. General audiences won't find MIMIC entertaining or appealing.
Speaking of gore, there's a fair amount of it. Many kill scenes happen off-screen, but enough close ups of mangled and rotting carcasses appear to please the bloodthirsty. Characters flee from the giant insects in futility, are captured, and quickly devoured. At one point, Dr. Tyler finds herself in a rotting scrap pile of human and animal body parts. The foul language also makes a mess of the movie. Crude words, obscenities, and profanity spew from people like blood from severed arteries. MIMIC kills itself with gore and foul language.
