Julianne (Julia Roberts) and Michael (Dermot Mulroney) made a pact in college that if neither found someone to love by the age of 28, they would marry each other. Now that day is just weeks away, and Michael just popped the question - to someone else. For nine years, Michael was the one constant in Julianne's life; the person who was always there for her. He loved her, and with one snap of her fingers, Michael would have been hers forever. But now that he is walking out of her life, she begins to wonder if the man of her dreams is getting away. She conspires to use the four days left before the wedding to get him back. MY BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING is an entertaining movie with some genuinely funny and moving moments. The intended teen and adult audience will laugh and cry with Julianne as she plots to get Michael back while facing the possibility of spending the rest of her life without him.
The movie is not devoid of positive messages. Julianne, who starts out as a self-serving schemer, learns that it's always best to tell the truth, even when it hurts. Unfortunately, the offensive elements overwhelm the good. The film sends a subtle message that pre-marital promiscuity is normal and acceptable. While there is no sex in the movie, Julianne and Michael refer to their one hot month in college with sentiment. They also talk about past lovers with no mention of any negative consequences as a result of their affairs. Also, a main character is homosexual. His lifestyle is handled neutrally, portrayed neither positively nor negatively. Although he never suffers any negative consequences as a result of it. The film also contains a few obscenities and profanities. Viewers with high moral standards will find themselves unequally yoked with MT BEST FRIEND'S WEDDING.
