In this fun, slapstick comedy, Danny Glover and Joe Pesci play Gus and Joe, two married men from New Jersey who go on a fishing trip to the Florida Everglades. They leave their families at home and take off in an old 1968 Plymouth pulling their boat behind them. It isn't long, though, before a con man named Dekker steals their car and heads for a swamp where he has hidden some stolen jewels and money. Gus (Glover) and Joe (Pesci) spend most of the remainder of the film trying to track down Dekker. And they get some help from two attractive women, Rita (Rosanna Arquette) and Angie (Lynn Whitfield) who are also trying to bring Dekker to justice. Among other things, they find themselves riding their runaway boat down the highway, accidentally burning down a hotel, damaging many expensive boats in a runaway yacht, doing battle with a crocodile and going on a wild swamp-airboat chase through the Everglades. Although much of the comedy is rather simplistic, it is good for some laughs and Glover and Pesci are very likeable comedians.
GONE FISHIN'comes close to being a completely decent, old-fashioned comedy and has only a relatively few minor flaws. Gus and Joe are family men who have a good relationship with their wives and kids. They also have a sense of honesty and integrity, as evidenced by their decision not to take the jewels for themselves if they find them. Although there are a few mildly suggestive scenes in the film featuring attractive women, no sex scenes or crude humor is included. However, one brief glance at a photo of a woman in a bikini is shown. Two mildly crude words are spoken, as well as four slang words with sexual connotations. Slapstick mishaps abound with frequent property destruction, rough treatment, gun threats, and a man being hit by lightning. None of the violence seems excessive, though. Only some limited questionable language prevents us from giving GONE FISHIN' our unqualified recommendation.
