FILM SYNOPSIS: Peter Quill, also known as Star Lord, (Pratt) knows two worlds, born of an earthly woman and alien father. With his own space vehicle and a magic helmet he roams the galaxy in search of a small powerful orb in hopes of selling it to the highest bidder. Dreams soon meet nightmares as he faces the most evil, feared man in the universe, Ronan (Lee Pace). War breaks out threatening the galaxy, and Peter leads a team of four to save it and the orb. Groot (voiced by Diesel), a twisted tall tree, Rocket (voiced by Cooper), a comical, slightly crazy raccoon, and Drax (Bautista), a blue tattooed giant all want to share in the promised wealth. Gamora (Saldana), Ronan’s step daughter joins Star Lord’s team to escape the evil Ronan.
PREVIEW REVIEW: Trying to be objective about a genre this reviewer does not relate to is difficult. Certainly the special effects, 3D technology are not only mind-boggling, but also add to the intensity of explosions, non-stop battles, and vicious attacks. An eight-year-old’s answer to what he liked about Guardians, was a comical dance by Groot the tree. The complicated plot, number of characters and intensity of the action is definitely not appropriate for young children.
Peter’s mission that began as a selfish project evolves into one of saving the galaxy, and his self-absorbed attitude becomes concern for others and willingness to risk his life to stop total destruction.
On a lighter side, the humor is clever and in the midst of battle and danger a little comic relief is welcome. Rocket, the raccoon, is particularly funny. The loud background noise sometimes drowned out the dialog, but one mouthed f-word, plus a few suggestive comments contribute to the PG-13 rating.
