Wealthy media mogul Rod McCain (Kevin Kline) has just purchased a quaint, sleepy zoo in England and is determined to make it profitable. He summons one of his stuffy employees from Hong Kong, Rollo Lee (John Cleese), to take over and put it in the winning column. But ambitious new employee Willa Weston (Jamie Lee Curtis) and McCain's unloved, inept son Vince (also played by Kline) decide to take charge themselves and relegate Rollo to a minor role. Rollo has already failed to rejuvenate the zoo by billing all the cuddly, likable animals as fierce, dangerous predators, so Willa and Vince decide to turn it into a theme park. They try all sorts of wacky marketing schemes, including dressing the zoo keepers in comical costumes, using unauthorized celebrity endorsements and putting comical signs on the animals. All these outlandish antics make for plenty of funny situations and the actors all give appealing performances.
Unfortunately, the comedy is full of crude sexual humor, some scantily clad women and off-color language. One rather crude implication which runs through the film is that people mistakenly think Rollo regularly has sex with several women at once, and even with some of the animals. No actual sex scenes are shown, but he's sometimes discovered in comical situations where both he and some women have undressed down to their underwear. The dialogue is full of suggestive comments pertaining to sex, female breasts and genitals. A number of crude words are also spoken along with several obscenities and profanities. On the other hand, the zoo managers and employees love the animals and want to protect them and maintain the zoo for the benefit of the public. So Hollywood has again taken a good idea for a comedy and polluted it with many crude and suggestive elements.
