FILM SYNOPSIS:Sean (Josh Hutchison), a troubled teenager, rebels against authority, especially his mom’s new husband, Hank (Dwayne Johnson), a former Navy cryptograph expert. Josh is obsessed with the novels of Jules Verne, Robert Louis Stevenson and Jonathan Swift as well as the whereabouts of his missing grandfather, Alexander (Michael Caine), an eccentric adventurer. In an attempt to bond with Josh, Hank arranges for the two of them to travel to a remote island in the South Pacific in answer to a mysterious message from Alexander.
PREVIEW REVIEW:This sequel to Journey to a Mysterious Island is a fantasy tale filled with miniature elephants, giant bees and lizards. It’s scary, creepy and beautiful in 3D, with all the ingredients to entertain preteens. Grandpa Alexander steals the show, at least for this reviewer. He lives on the island that, according to all the research, disappeared into the bottom of the Pacific in the 1800s. But these four explorers discover their paradise is about to sink again and their only way off the island is to find Captain Nemo’s Nautilus submarine described in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea.
Very young children may be frightened in some of the action scenes as the characters are chased and threatened by scary 3D creatures. Tense moments occur during a helicopter’s flight into the eye of a hurricane, but plenty of comic relief softens the dangers facing the determined group. There is no sex, but Hank’s coaching Sean on how to attract girls by jiggling his abs is weird. Only a few mild crude words and no profanities or obscenities were noted.
