Mac Macdougal (Sean Connery) is a master thief and a suspect in the theft of a valuable Rembrandt painting. Agent Virginia "Gin" Baker (Catherine Zeta-Jones) of the insurance company is sent to England to spy on Mac. But Mac turns the tables by visiting her hotel room. He learns she stole the Rembrandt using his style, because she needs his help on an even more lucrative museum heist. While stealing a rare golden mask from the museum, Gin must do a precise ballet through unseen laser beams before the guard passes by. But that job just pays for information on the ultimate prize, eight billion dollars from the Malaysia branch of the International Monetary Bank. Here, dodging cameras and getting to the computer to transfer the money proves easier than getting away when the alarms sound. Through it all, though, Mac wonders if Gin is really a thief or setting a trap for him. The tense action scenes and audience-pleasing stars make ENTRAPMENT a good bet at the box office.

Unfortunately, the likeable main characters are thieves, whose illegal activities of outwitting security systems are glorified. The only justification for the thefts is so that Gin can claim the record for the biggest heist. When Gin asks a seductive question, Mac says he lives by a strict set of rules that prohibit sexual relations with his partner. He says that personal emotions can get in the way of trust. Mac does sneak into Gin's room as she sleeps and, when she awakes, her bare back is seen as she talks to him. A few comments and looks imply that he is admiring her body, but the story focus is on the action. Moderate scenes of violence include Mac holding Gin underwater after finding out she's spying for the insurance company, and an attack by a knife-wielding thug in another scene. Also, police units chase Mac and Gin, firing gas canisters near them. The biggest disappointment is the use of gratuitous obscenity and profanity. Even in this PG-13 film, the f-word is used twice, along with 9 s-words and 6 irreverent uses of God's name. ENTRAPMENT trips up with needless foul comments and crimes without consequences.
