Open Your Eyes

Its 1997, or is it? Thats the question Cesar (Eduardo Noriega) finds himself asking repeatedly in this Spanish thriller. Reality is not quite what it seems for Cesar, and he is faced with the prospect that he might be living in a dream world. The film begins at Cesars 25th birthday party, and after dumping Nuria (Najwa Nimri), he spends the rest of the evening with Sofia (Penelope Cruz). The next day his face is disfigured in a horrible accident, and Cesar decides to live out his days in shame. Sofia hasnt called, and even his best friend Pelayo (Fele Martinez) is treating him differently. On top of all of this Cesar is haunted by horrible dreams that make him doubt whether any of his life is even real. OPEN YOUR EYES is an engrossing, mind-boggling film that will keep audiences guessing throughout. However, its box office success may be hindered by its limited release and lack of publicity. The dialogue is in Spanish with English subtitles.

OPEN YOUR EYES does a tremendous job of asking questions about reality and how people know that the life they lead is in fact real. The film also asks questions about immortality, and part of the story hints that doctors will find a way to provide immortality in the future. Several objectionable elements are portrayed, including two sex scenes with female breast and rear nudity. These scenes clearly show the couples having sex and they include graphic sounds and motions. In one very terrifying and disturbing scene, a woman is killed by the man with whom she is having sex. Obscene language and profanity litters the dialogue, with 25 f-words and 9 regular profanities. The foul language, violence, and sexual content will make many viewers want to close their eyes at even the thought of seeing this film.
