FILM SYNOPSIS: The story begins when Llewelyn Moss (BROLIN) finds a pickup truck surrounded by a sentry of dead men. A load of heroin and two million dollars in cash are still in the back. When Moss takes the money, he sets off a chain reaction of catastrophic violence that not even the lawin the person of aging, disillusioned Sheriff Bell (JONES) can contain. As Moss tries to evade his pursuersin particular a mysterious mastermind who flips coins for human lives (BARDEM) the film simultaneously strips down the American crime drama and broadens its concerns to encompass themes as ancient as the Bible and as bloodily contemporary as this mornings headline.
PREVIEW REVIEW: Now, this is a scary movie. Films such as the Friday the 13th franchise never really spooked me. But a film where we see a real-life monster, thats unnerving. In the news the other day I heard that a young woman answered an ad to baby-sit. When she arrived, a 19-year-old man shot her to death. He didnt want to molest her or rob her. He just wanted to kill somebody. They walk among us and they have no soul. Thats the villain in this film. Hes a professional hit man and hes utterly dead inside. Even when hes injured, which happens several times in the film, he reacts as if hes desensitized even to self-pain.
So, despite the fact that the technical and artistic merits blend together, making it one of the most mesmerizing, armchair-gripping films of the year, one feels as if hes just spent two hours with the devil.
