Amber Tamblyn. Horror/thriller. Written by Stephen Susco. Directed by Takashi Shimizu.

FILM SYNOPSIS: In this horror sequel, a young woman living in Tokyo experiences the same curse that afflicted her sister in The Grudge 1. This supernatural force makes its home in a haunted house where it takes out its demonic frustration on all who enter. The vengeful spirit afflicts its victims with a rage that leads them to killing others before their own deaths. But the evil spirit isnt content with its dwelling place. It also manifests itself back in the states on another dysfunctional family.

PREVIEW REVIEW: A lot of horror films out right now are excessively gruesome, containing desensitizing amounts of torture. Gratefully, The Grudge 2 is more creepy than gruesome. Alas, its creepiness comes from an apparition with a decidedly demonic appearance. The film did very well during its opening weekend, young people flocking to it because it involved pretty peers in spooky situations. But the films concept has already been spoofed so often that the attempted scare factor falls short. One could also say that much of the storyline is downright stupid, as are most of the characters.

The Grudge 2 is also sexually titillating and contains violent imagery, two elements well represented in films aimed at the youth demographic. These are elements that feed prurient interests, but do little to satisfy the soul. Add these shortcomings with the fact that the film contains a minimal moral and church-attending moviegoers will most likely find themselves shortchanged.
