The beautiful, wild and irresponsible Maggie Feller (Cameron Diaz) cant hold down a job and steals from her family. Her older sister, Rose (Toni Collette), is a successful but overworked lawyer in Philadelphia who is often frustrated by her sisters selfish and reckless lifestyle. Following a tragic betrayal of trust, Maggie is kicked out of Roses apartment with plans to head to New York to start over. At the train station, Maggie has a change of heart and decides instead to find her grandmother (Shirley MacLaine), a woman she barely knows. Maggies journey to a Florida retirement center is the beginning of her transformation into a responsible adult through the tough love and support of her grandmother. While not in contact with Maggie, Rose has a similar journey that will lead both women on a course of reconciliation with their family and their past.
In Her Shoes ends as a beautiful movie of restoration and reconciliation. Unfortunately, due to the portrayal of Maggie as wild and irresponsible, the audience is exposed to profanity, mild nudity and anonymous sex. The film starts with Maggie in a bathroom stall at her 10-year high-school reunion engaged in sex with a man whose name she doesnt know until she reads it on his name tag. Sadly, her responsible sister Rose ends up in bed after literally bumping into a man at work. After a bad encounter with one man, Rose finds true love in the kind and romantic overtures of another (Mark Feuerstein). He is portrayed as the perfect man, yet he ends up in bed with Rose after reading her a steamy novel. After sex, he says, Does this mean Im your b-tch? So much for the perfect man. Preview would recommend this film for its redemptive story but cannot due to over-the-top foul language and sexuality.
