In this adult comedy written and produced by Steve Carell, Andy Stitzer (Carell) is a techno geek who is content working at Smart Tech electronics store. His idea of fun is making egg-salad sandwiches, painting miniature models, and maintaining an action-figures collection. He seeks to fit in with his co-workers (Paul Rudd, Romany Malco and Seth Rogen) by making up stories about his sexual experiences. The guys determine that Andy is still a virgin and decide to dismantle Andy’s carnal innocence and introduce him to the sexual desires that he has denied far too long. Under their tutelage, Andy begins to notice women and is confronted with several sexual situations that backfire on him. He is relieved to meet Trish (Catherine Keener), a mother of three, who has been burned by sexual relationships in the past. They agree to have a nonsexual relationship, much to the chagrin of his co-workers.

According to this movie, a person cannot be happy and fulfilled unless he or she has had sex. To deny oneself means being a misfit, a deviant or a potential serial killer. The moral messages about pursuing sex for self-gratification are what make The 40 Year Old Virgin such a raunchy and despicable film. Andy’s so-called friends intentionally expose him to pornography, prostitutes and pressures to participate in sex before marriage. They convey that it’s important to practice on people they don’t love so that they’ll be good at sex when they meet the person they do love. There is no concern for the transmission of sexual diseases or the emotional effects of sexual indulgence outside of marriage. The audience is assaulted by extremely graphic dialog and images designed to make one laugh but so obscene they should make one blush.
