Honeymooners, The

MPAA Rating: PG-13

This comedy is based on the 1950s sitcom originally starring Jackie Gleason and Art Carney. Ralph Kramden (Cedric the Entertainer) is a bus driver in New York City and always thinks up ideas to get rich quick. When his best friend, Ed Norton (Mike Epps), who works in the sewer, finds an old train car below the streets, they plan to use it for giving tours of New York City. In order to get started, however, they must use money that was saved to buy a house. After spending all the money and then failing, the two guys must come up with a plan to get the money back in the bank before Ralphs wife, Alice (Gabrielle Union), finds out. As Ralph and Ed are walking and thinking, they find a dog in a sack in a dumpster. After seeing how fast the dog runs, they decide to race the dog at the dog track, which leads them down another trail of bumbling mishaps.

This film will likely be a disappointment for those who remember the original sitcom. None of the actors does a good job at imitating the original actors although that appears to be the attempt. Ralph is deceptive and scheming as seen when he takes money from the household account without telling his wife. In addition to getting involved with a con artist, the two men lie and cheat to accomplish their mission. They have few scruples. As bad as they are, their behavior is not glamorized or condoned but neither is it condemned. Someone says, Too much honesty can ruin a good relationship, and another says, If Jesus would stop making movies and answer my prayers With bad language and a few instances of sexual innuendo, The Honeymooners is mild for a PG-13 film. But overall poor morals and no clear positive message earn it a negative acceptability rating with Preview.
