In Off the Map Bo Groden (Valentina de Angelis), the only child of an eccentric family living the simple life in the old desert land of New Mexico, is compelling as she creatively deals with the peripheral results of experiencing the depression of her father, Charley (Sam Elliott). Her mother, Arlene (Joan Allen), is an earthy, peace-loving woman with a Hoppe Indian heritage who holds the family together. Charleys best friend, George (J.K. Simmons), keeps a constant vigil of companionship to help his friends through a difficult time. The visit of an IRS auditor, William Gibbs (Jim True-Frost) brings a fresh breath to the Groden family and affects Williams life in a unique and positive way. Their journey together is a gripping adventure from the depths of depression to the soaring heights of realizing your own true potential and using your innate talents.
As an adult, Bo (Amy Brenneman) reflects on her childhood while looking through sketches in the artists notebook that belonged to William Gibb. His sketches of Arlene in her garden, where she often weeded in the nude, are discerningly displayed. There are a few occasions when language, although mild, may be offensive. Bo uses some less than honest means to acquire products and she applies for and receives a MasterCard, which she uses indiscriminately. On occasion, Arlene, Charley and George drink beer. Off the Map is a story about real people coping with real life.
