In this romantic-comedy sequel to Bridget Jones Diary, Bridget (Renee Zellweger) is in love with the man of her dreams, Mark Darcy (Colin Firth), and he with her. Bridget is a little overweight, a bit clumsy and has horrible self-esteem. Because of her self-doubt, she is constantly questioning Marks love for her. She knows that other women out there are more attractive, eloquent and graceful. Whenever she sees a beautiful woman talking to Mark, she becomes even more insecure. Because of her poor self-image, she needs more affirmation from Mark. But though he tries, it never seems to be enough. They finally break up, and she finds herself back with her old womanizing boyfriend and former boss (Hugh Grant). This only makes a bad situation worse. Also starring Jim Broadbent.

Those who have struggled with self-esteem issues will relate to Bridget Jones. This film makes several points: self-degradation only makes matters worse, accepting and giving love is difficult when one doesnt love herself, and the ability to trust is hindered when one questions his self-worth. Mark is faithful to Bridget and accepts her unconditionally, but she is unable to understand how someone so wonderful could love her so much. Bridget learns an important lesson by looking at others and recognizing that everyone has struggles and problems to overcome. Only when she stops looking primarily at herself will she be freed to offer love to another. Bridget and Mark are living together as an unmarried couple. The Edge of Reason is a cute film with a good message, but its frequent use of bad language and poor morals including crude sexual language, implied sex and lesbian content overshadow its positive message.
