Alfie

MPAA Rating: R

In this remake of the film that made Michael Caine famous, a cockney limousine driver (Jude Law) in present-day New York City breaks the heart of every woman he meets, except one. The irresistible and womanizing Alfie has one goal in life, and that is to woo and bed beautiful women. Julie (Marisa Tomei), a single mom, longs for her son to have a father in his life, and Nikki (Sienna Miller) gets help for her drug and alcohol addiction in an effort to hold on to Alfie. When his only friend (Omar Epps) asks Alfie to help him mend his broken relationship with Lonette (Nia Long), Alfie and Lonette get drunk and have sex. Alfie then takes up with Liz, an older woman (Susan Sarandon), whose sexual escapades equal Alfies. Eventually he realizes his naive conception of happiness has created a big void in his life. A popular song inspired by the original 1966 Alfie sums up the melancholy theme: Whats it all about, Alfie?

Both the movie and the character Alfie are likable but not admirable. The funny, good-looking Alfie could charm the horns off a billy goat, but his big flaw is a lack of morals and accountability. He jumps from the bed of one beautiful woman to the next, making each feel loved through flattery and lies. When he and Lonette become involved, the consequences of sex mixed with alcohol and drugs are pregnancy, broken friendships and a guilt-ridden marriage. The negative consequences of promiscuity are shown, yes, but viewers are subjected to many graphic sexual encounters, full breast nudity, heavy petting and explicit dialog. Alfie and his girlfriends smoke pot and drink heavily. A comical scene of Alfie being examined by a doctor with a weird sense of humor adds to the offensive content as do several strong obscenities and profanity. Preview can save you money by telling you what Alfies all about sex.
