Punisher, The

MPAA Rating: R

Entertainment: +1 1/2

Content: -3

Based on Marvels comic-book hero, FBI agent Frank Castle (Thomas Jane) is one of the best in undercover operations, but years of violence and near-death experiences have taken a toll on his family. Hes motivated to start a new life with his family, but his last undercover operation in Tampa goes bad, resulting in the death of wealthy businessman Howard Saints (John Travolta) son. Saints business helps drug dealers smuggle their money, and he is known for his unrelenting rage and vicious cruelty. Saint seeks the justice of his son by murdering Castles wife and children. Castle is left alone with nothing but the memory of his familys brutal slaughter and his own rage and despair. Operating from a dilapidated, waterfront dwelling, Castle plots a brilliant plan to punish Saint and his whole crew, creating some jaw-clinching suspense.

Throughout the film, there is constant friction between vengeance and forgiveness. Unchecked anger is shown to fester and eventually become an uncontrollable fire that seeks to burn everything in its path. The film demonstrates how it can control a person and leave a life empty and without hope. The Punisher is action-packed and exciting, but it also provokes introspection as to how one should respond when wronged by others. But the film is unfortunately filled with gruesome and bloody violence and rough language, including eight f-words and several occurrences of profanity. It also has a few instances of homosexuality with two men kissing and a glamorous portrayal of drinking and drug use. Due to these elements as well as some sensual content, The Punisher receives a strong negative rating from Preview.
