Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind

MPAA Rating: R

Entertainment: +2 1/2

Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet) are singles who have a chance encounter. Joel is a quiet, lonely, reserved bachelor, while Clementine is outgoing, obnoxious and free-spirited, leading to personality clashes and turbulence. To have their memory erased and start over, they undergo an experimental procedure by a psychiatrist (Tom Wilkinson), assisted by his dysfunctional staff (Kirsten Dunst, Mark Ruffalo and Elijah Wood). But something goes wrong, and drastic events redirect the course of their future and lead them on a heart-wrenching journey. A hearts love is powerful, but a minds single decision can control a persons entire life and lead to surprising consequences. The conclusion of this mind-blowing story will leave you stunned.

This is a comedy with underlying sadness and misery throughout. No character has joy or hope in this story about real, relational choices whether to accept the reality of flawed relationships or to reject reality and live in utter discontent. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind shows both sides in the relationship, as well as the different consequences: Accepting reality will enrich a persons life while rejecting it will leave one in ruin. This deeply thought-provoking film leads to pondering what it really means to accept others and to love people as they are. The commendable themes, however, are accompanied with heavy use of obscene language, including 20 f-words, and even more profanity far beyond what is necessary for the story. The film, also having sexual content and other adult themes and discussions, has an appropriate R rating and should only be viewed by mature audiences.
