This direct-to-video/DVD, animated sequel follows Timon the meerkat (voiced by Nathan Lane) in his early years. Hes still looking for Hakuna Matata, a life without worries. Growing up among the meerkat community, Timon is not able to do anything right and doesnt think he fits in. So he seeks wisdom from a monkey, the wise Rafiki (Robert Guillaume), about where he might find the perfect place. Rafiki tells him you must look beyond what you see. On his search, Timon discovers that friends, like Pumbaa the warthog (Ernie Sabella) and Simba the lion cub (Shaun Flemming), and family are what life is really about. The music is fun and upbeat. A TV remote control continually interrupts the film as the animals talk about the sequences, which may be confusing for small children. But overall, it will be seen as a winner by kids. Also in the vocal cast are Whoopi Goldberg, Matthew Broderick and Jerry Stiller.

Lion King 1 addresses the contrast of selfishness and friendship, a good theme for children of any age to learn about. The movie has no offensive elements or bad language, but there is an instance of bathroom humor. Morally, the content is acceptable for all audiences. One questionable element is the somewhat mystical advice Timon receives from Rafiki as he searches for a place where there are no worries. But the refreshing conclusion is that Timon discovers the only place where there are no worries is when your family and friends are there for you. Be aware that popping in and out of the movie are two hyenas that could possibly frighten very young children. This movie will strongly appeal to children l0 and under, but may be a little confusing in places for the youngest.
