When realtor Jim Evers (Eddie Murphy) hears about an old mansion for sale, he convinces his wife, Sara (Marsha Thomason), and his children, Megan (Aree Davis) and Michael (Marc John Jeffries), to take a 20 minute tops tour of the mansion. But a sudden thunderstorm leaves them stranded in the old house with the owner (Nathaniel Parker), his butler (Terence Stamp), the housekeepers (Wallace Shawn and Dina Walters) and some mysterious residents. Jim does not believe in ghosts, but upon some investigation he discovers more to this house than meets the eye. With the help of Madame Leota (Jennifer Tilly), the talking crystal ball, he discovers the secret of the mansion, the real reason they were called there and, most importantly, that his workaholic tendencies have caused him to neglect his family.
The Haunted Mansion is a comedy/horror film based on one of the rides at Disneyland. The ride is probably more fun than the movie is. One positive is the special effects in the film, which are incredible. Breathing doors, flying musical instruments and singing busts, which are especially entertaining, keep the audience continually mesmerized. This unfortunately is not enough to make the movie good since it is neither funny nor scary. But the kids will like it. There are some negative elements that parents will want to know about: some mild bad language, two suicides in the beginning (one graphic), and some images that may frighten younger children.
