Scary Movie 3

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Entertainment: +2 1/2

Back for a third round, Scary Movie 3 makes fun of virtually every recent thriller from The Matrix to Signs. In a mixed up plot that exists solely to provide for the films crude humor and physical comedy, this installment tells the story of Cindy Campbell (Anna Faris), a news reporter with an interest in the supernatural. When Cindy becomes acquainted with strange crop circles in Tom Logans (Charlie Sheen) corn field, she has a hunch that its more than a hoax. Pulling together a crew of interested, yet out-of-place, friends from rappers to the President of the United States (Leslie Nielsen), Cindy and her love-interest, George (Simon Rex), investigate the mystery. After avoiding dangers, visiting a prophet (Queen Latifah) and meeting the Architect (George Carlin), they end up halting an alien invasion and saving the planet from uncertain destruction. Phew!

Scary Movie 3 is definitely on the lighter and funnier side of recent releases. It wont take much brain power to get a chuckle out of the pervasive one-liners and physical comedic stunts. The film doesnt take itself or the films that it spoofs too seriously. While there is a lot to laugh at in Scary Movie 3, the merging of a dozen or more plot lines into one makes it a little difficult to follow. It also keeps the jokes very simple, which means that the filmmaker often reverts to crude language and bathroom or sexual humor to get laughs. While some parts are funny, some are inappropriate, especially for the targeted youth audience. Perhaps the most objectionable element of the film is a tacit reference to the Roman Catholic sexual abuse scandals. Whatever ones take on the issue, pedophilia isnt joke material. Preview suggests that you find a cleaner comedy.
