In this heartwarming sci-fi comedy, 12-year-old Owen Baker (Liam Aiken) gets permission from his parents (Molly Shannon and Kevin Nealon) to pick out a dog at the local pound. The dog, whom he names Hubble (voice of Matthew Broderick), turns out to be an intergalactic dog from the dog star Sirius whose space ship has crashed near the Bakers home. Owens life shifts into high gear after a supernatural phenomenon enables him to understand Hubble and the other dogs conversations. Hubble, whose true name is Canid 3942, has been sent to report back to the Greater Dane (voice of Vanessa Redgrave) why dogs are not dominating earth. The hilarity never stops as Hubble tries to teach the neighborhood dogs how to take control and Owen struggles to hide his secret powers from his parents and friends. Good Boy!, created by Henson Productions of Muppets fame, is a film the whole family, especially animal lovers, will enjoy.

Along with the laughs are some important truths about friendship and loyalty, the definition of home, and the importance of learning to have fun. When we first meet Hubble, hes a no-nonsense kind of dog. He doesnt want to be petted or play in the park because hes never experienced affection or fun until he meets earth dogs. Owens parents learn their frequent moves make it hard for their only child to make lasting friends. Owen finds out that whats really important isnt where you are but who you are with. The PG rating is for some crude humor among the dogs about flatulence, a reference to male genitals and dogs bathroom habits, but there are no F- or S-words, profanity or nudity. Except for a few neighborhood bullies taunting Owen and throwing rocks at him and the dogs, plus some chases, Good Boy! is free of violence. And theres no sexual innuendo or behavior. Put this wholesome, delightful movie on your to-do list.
