The Visual Bible Series brings this drama, a word-for-word presentation of the most widely read book in the New Testament, to the big screen. Narrated by Christopher Plummer from the American Bible Societys Good News Bible translation and recreated with a historical focus, the film visually brings the text to life. The movie was filmed in Spain with a cast of more than 2,000 extras. Director Phillip Saville spent a great deal of time in research in order to accurately recreate the biblical garments, dwellings and landscapes, resulting in a beautiful and picturesque film. British Shakespearean actor Henry Ian Cusick portrays Jesus in a caring, warm manner, with occasional flashes of anger, especially when dealing with the Pharisees. The screenplay is true to the text and shows Jesus life from the foretelling of John the Baptist through his earthly ministry, miracles, crucifixion and final appearance to the disciples.

There are no negative elements in this movie, although we do need to issue a mild warning to parents of small children. An angry Jesus is shown swinging a robe and overturning tables and cages when he clears the Temple. Additionally, when Jesus is put on trial and beaten, although only a shadow of a man being whipped is shown, he does appear beaten and bloody before Pilate. Although not terribly severe and handled tastefully, the bloody body and crucifixion scenes might bother small children. The guard piercing Jesus side with a spear is not done graphically or excessively. Preview gives The Gospel of John its highest recommendation as an honest, well-made film that is faithful to Scripture. This film could serve as a beautiful way to introduce the unchurched to the person of Jesus Christ and what He is all about.
