Freddy vs. Jason

MPAA Rating: R

Entertainment: +3

Content: -3

Freddy vs. Jason is the union of two suspense/horror movie series: Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund), the talkative and sometimes witty dream master, draws Jason Voorhees (Ken Kirzinger), the silent and hockey-mask-wearing camp stalker, from Crystal Lake to Elm Street. Freddy seeks revenge against a community that protected themselves from him through an anti-dream medication, and Jason brings his rampage of death on the misbehaving teenagers on Elm Street. Freddy, with his razor-tipped yard glove, gains energy from the neighborhoods fear that it is he who is doing the killing. Jason, primarily using a machete, finds a new set of young people he deems worthy of his blade. A reported 3,000 gallons of blood flows while one evildoer kills teenagers while they are awake and the other kills them in their sleep. As the title suggests, the duo turns against each other in a fight to the finish.

Freddy vs. Jason brings together two horror series, with a combined 17 movies, into one cataclysmic killing fest. It is nothing more than a series of more than 20 formulaic, gruesome murders with blood spurting and appendages flying grotesquely through the air as the audience laughs and cheers. Graphic violence with little plot is served up as entertainment. When bare flesh is seen in any kind of sensual act, it is not long before that same flesh is covered in blood. The extensive use of crude, obscene and profane language alone makes this movie inappropriate for children. But it goes beyond inappropriate in its glamorizing the use of alcohol, marijuana and other drugs; its glorified killings; and its graphic sex scenes. When one character answers the door somewhat fearfully and then sees a friend with a case of beer, he says, You are the answer to my prayers. Stay away from this one.
