Los Angeles police captain Thomas Fuller (Larry Poindexter) cares more about his public image than doing the right thing. When a public relations nightmare develops, the captain demotes two of his best officers, Jim Street (Colin Farrell) and Brian Gamble (Jeremy Renner), from S.W.A.T. (Special Weapons and Tactics division). As the image of the LAPD continues to decline, longtime police veteran Sergeant Dan Hondo Harrelson (Samuel L. Jackson) receives a mandate to build a better SWAT team. Against the wishes of Captain Fuller, Hondo puts officer Street on his new SWAT team along with four other veterans (LL Cool J, Brian Van Holt, Josh Charles and Michelle Rodriguez). Once the new team passes their entrance exam, Capt. Fuller immediately deploys them to transport a wealthy international criminal (Olivier Martinez) who has offered a $100 million reward to anybody who can free him. In a surprising turn of events, Street discovers that an old friend is pursuing the reward money.

S.W.A.T, the best of local law enforcement, protects and serves the American public. They regularly put themselves in harms way to save others, and the main characters walk a fine line between doing the right thing for the public and remaining true to their department. Samuel L. Jacksons character inspires the rest of the team to be the best they can be and to work as a team. Sadly, the foul language of the characters pollutes an otherwise witty script. Sex dominates the officers conversation when they are not focused on police issues. The American public is portrayed as a bunch of gun-toting lunatics who will do anything for money. Violence, although not excessively gory, overshadows many scenes with monotonous gunfight and crash scenes. Avoid this one.
