League of Extraordinary Gentlemen, The

MPAA Rating: PG-13

This fantasy thriller opens in foggy London in 1899, when the world is in danger of a takeover by the evil Fantom, a ruthless dictator who seeks complete power. There remains but one hope a league of extraordinary beings assembled to combat the evil and save the world from chaos. The enigmatic M (Richard Roxbury) is the recruiter, and legendary adventurer Allan Quartermain (Sean Connery) leads the select crew: Captain Nemo (Naseeruddin Shah), Dracula vampiress Mina Harker (Peta Wilson), invisible man Rodney Skinner (Tony Curran), American secret service agent Tom Sawyer (Shane West), Dorian Gray (Stuart Townsend) and Dr. Jekyll/Mr. Hyde (Jason Flemyng). This group of superheroes must decide if they can trust each other and work as a team. While endeavoring to tackle such a monstrous task, the team must deal with dangers and demons of their past. Through a series of fascinating and mystifying scenes of heroic efforts, viewers will be glued to their seats in suspense and anticipation of the final outcome.

The twist of events and the incredible special effects make for an enjoyable film. Each character comes face to face with dark memories from the past and can no longer run from them. They work together as a team and stay the course in spite of their fears. Each member of the league comes to realize some important truths: the freedom they experience was worth every heartbreak along the way, and life is best when its moving forward and not held captive by the past. Positively, the film lifts up the virtues of courage and compassion as weapons against evil. However, the film contains two obscenities along with some moderate, unnecessary profanity. Dracula vampiress is sexually driven by the taste of blood, which takes away from the films commendable aspects. Due to the language, sexually suggestive dialogue and some major violence, Preview gives The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen an acceptability rating of 1.5.
