Darkness Falls

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Entertainment: +2

Content: -2

In this horror film, the town of Darkness Falls, Maine, is haunted because of an event that occurred back in the 1800s: an angry mob of townspeople hanged Matilda, a resident of the town, after falsely accusing her of a crime and then burned her body. Now, 150 years later, the ghost of Matilda unleashes her vengeance on the town. Kyle Walsh (Chaney Kley) experienced the terror in Darkness Falls as a child and left the town as a result. Twelve years later, he receives a phone call from his childhood girlfriend Caitlin (Emma Caulfield) whose little brother Michael (Lee Cormie) is being terrorized by the evil of Darkness Falls. Kyle returns to Darkness Falls to assist but soon realizes that he is in over his head and does all that he can to survive the horror while trying to save Caitlin and Michael.

Kyle shows a great deal of courage by going back to help in spite of his fears, selflessly placing his life in danger to rescue his friends. While not intended as a moral parallel, a metaphorical theme in the film is the importance of staying in the light in order to keep out of the darkness. The positive elements of the film are lost, however, in the glaring weaknesses of Jonathan Liebesman's first directing attempt. The film has some make-you-jump scenes but also has its share of wannabe scary scenes. Darkness Falls may frighten some viewers, but others will see it as a silly series of gory murders as person after person is slashed or dismembered. The film has many graphic, bloody scenes and murders and is extremely violent. The film contained several obscenities and some profanity. As a result of the rough language and graphic scenes of violence, Darkness Falls receives an unacceptable rating from Preview
