This light romantic comedy will remind viewers how magical New York City can be. Jonathan Trager (John Cusack) meets Sara Thomas (Kate Beckinsale) by a fortunate accident, or serendipity, as both Christmas shop in the city. The two spend the rest of an enchanting day together without exchanging names. Before parting, Sara teases him saying if it is meant to be, destiny will bring them together again. The story fast-forwards ten years. Sara, now a psychotherapist in San Francisco, lives with her weird New Age musician boyfriend (John Corbett), but still secretly pines for Jonathan. On impulse, she flies to New York determined to reconnect with a man she barely knows. At the same time, the now engaged Jonathan decides to take control of his destiny and find Sara. Lots of laughs erupt as the two almost cross paths, search for clues and ultimately find true love. Fans of romance comedies like SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE will enjoy SERENDIPITY as their kind of date movie.

Despite its sweetness, SERENDIPITY disappoints in many respects. Jonathan and Sara are likable, wholesome, kind and funny but both live with a "significant other." Hollywood continues to present role models who acknowledge the need for someone to love, but can't commit to marriage. Because Sara's boyfriend is portrayed as a New Age musician with no talent and Jonathan's fiance appears to be a cold, spoiled socialite, it appears their feelings don't count or are even considered. While there is no nudity or violence, one completely gratuitous scene shows a couple obviously having sex, viewed voyeuristically through a window. Although limited, foul language includes four s-words and three strong profanities. On the plus side, Jonathan and Sara each have loyal friends willing to go to extremes, to help them find their lost loves. SERENDIPITY may not be so much a fortunate accident, as it is a lighthearted romantic comedy that strays into objectionable territory.
