Evolution

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Entertainment: +2 1/2

Content: -2 1/2

A former Pentagon scientist, Professor Ira Kane (David Duchovny of televisions THE X-FILES), is relegated to teaching community college in a small Arizona town because of a serious mistake during his development of an anthrax vaccine. A sudden meteor crash and subsequent discovery of alien life affords Kane and volleyball coach/geology professor Harry Block (Orlando Jones) the opportunity to rise from obscurity. With visions of Nobel Prizes in their heads, Kane and Block set out to protect their discovery from evil, bumbling military officials and, at the same time, save mankind from the quickly-evolving aliens. Comparisons are inevitable since the film comes from the same production team that created GHOSTBUSTERS. Unfortunately for this action-comedy, similar hilarity does NOT ensue. Laughs are few and far between unless you happen to be fond of bathroom humor. A major tenet of Darwins theory of evolution is survival of the fittest; EVOLUTION may not fit the theory.

EVOLUTION offers few redeeming qualities. However, the friendship between the two main characters is inspiring and one does credit God for success. But the theory of evolution is portrayed as scientific fact in this film. Most of the humor is derived from sexual dialogue, bodily functions, or military and government bashing. One alien scorpion gets under a man's skin and is removed through his rear, while another alien gets a fire hose up its backside for supposed laughs. Several sudden appearances of scary aliens may frighten younger viewers. Mild and moderate violence is plentiful as aliens and humans battle. Crude language, obscenities and sexual innuendo are almost non-stop. Discerning viewers will want to opt for something more evolved than EVOLUTION.
