Porter (Warren Beatty) and Ellie (Diane Keaton) have been good friends with Griffin (Gary Shandling) and Mona (Goldie Hawn) for many years. And both couples have been married about 25 years. But when Mona finds out that Griffin once had an affair, she immediately begins divorce proceedings. This makes Porter nervous about Ellie discovering he has a little side relationship of his own. And when his infidelities expand to include Mona, it gets even more difficult to keep the secret. TOWN & COUNTRY generates a few chuckles and fans of the actors may enjoy the proceedings. However, making a comedy out of infidelity and failing marriages is a tough line to walk, which may be why this film took awhile to market.

Romantic comedies of the past used encounters mistakenly interpreted as infidelity to get laughs. However, TOWN & COUNTRY employs both couples’ admitted marital wanderings as its springboard for humor. But infidelity and failed marriages are not all that funny. Seeing people ruin their lives, hurt their wife and kids, and jeopardize their careers is tragedy, not comedy. Throughout the movie, people ask questions or make comments about various acts of infidelity. But the most explicit comments come from a side character who berates her husband for having small genitals and his unwillingness to engage in unconventional sex. Graphic sexual encounters with nudity, obscene dialogue and humorous treatment of adultery are not worth visiting TOWN & COUNTRY.
