Nowhere To Run

Jean-Claude Van Damme, the "Muscles from Brussels," stars as Sam, an escaped convict. He befriends Claytie (Rosanna Arquette), a widow with two young children. Claytie is being pressured to sell her land to unscrupulous land developers. Sam protects her with his martial arts skills from the intensifying terror tactics of the land developers. All is well until a sheriff bribed by the developers discovers Sam's true identity and informs Claytie of her friend's prison record. NOWHERE TO RUN, billed as a film showing Van Damme's "tender side," is at times far from tender. It contains plenty of Van Damme's trademark martial arts. The tender side is supplied through Sam's relationship with Mookie (Kieran Culkin), who sees in him a needed father figure. Mookie steals the show, providing much of the film's considerable humor.

Sadly, most of the humor has sexual connotations. The children discuss Sam's genitals, and ask about their mother's sexual relations with him. Sexual intercourse is depicted once, with nudity. Also included are one instance of full rear male nudity, full frontal female nudity three times, excluding the genital area, and several scenes with female breast nudity. When Sam reads a pornographic magazine, with breast nudity on the cover, Mookie bursts in and sees the magazine. Objectionable language includes five f-words, ten s-words and six regular profanities. Martial arts violence is frequent but moderate. More intense are several shootings and a particularly bloody scene of a man hit by a car and lacerated by the windshield glass. Sound "tender?" Sexual situations, language and violence give the discriminating viewer nowhere to run, but away from this film.
