Jake Wyre (Peter Weller) and Charles French (Robert Hays) are mercenaries who used to work together for the CIA. Wyre is the security chief for General Bosavi, the tyrannical, deranged dictator of Tengara, a small Indonesian country. French leads a botched coup attempt against Bosavi, and is captured. Wyre refuses to follow Bosavi's order to shoot French. Instead the two flee the country. Back with the CIA, they return to Tengara to train a guerilla army led by Ahkatar, the deposed dictator who is sympathetic to U.S. interests. Among the soldiers is Ahkatar's beautiful niece Suleta. Bosavi gets wind of the coming coup, and the guerrilla army is ambushed on the way to the palace. Suleta is killed and Ahkatar is captured. Rather than take their money and run, Wyre and French decide to set things right and rescue Ahkatar and kill Bosavi. FIFTY/FIFTY is a predictable, formula buddy-action film. There's no time for character development - must get on to more killing; no time for plot - must move on to blowing something up. It's nothing more than a comic book story with real actors.

The title, however, is appropriate. Fifty percent violence and fifty percent language make up its R rating. Violence is plentiful and graphic, including many shootings and a gratuitous scene where a man is blown to pieces by a mortar shell. Language includes 22 s-words, 15 f-words and 9 regular profanities, as well as slang for intercourse and discussion of sex with a goat. To its credit, there is no nudity or sexual situations. However, the high body count and bountiful expletives make FIFTY/FIFTY one to miss.
