In a romantic setting in the beautiful Pacific Northwest, with waves crashing on rocks, solitary figures walk along the shore at sunset. An odd couple, one disciplined and neat, one free and loose are thrown together at a writer's retreat. As roommates who first irritate, then become friends, fight and make up, they ultimately become lovers. The roommates are two women. Claire (Trisha Todd) is a "straight" writer who shares a room with Noel (Karen Trumbo) a lesbian psychiatrist/author. The retreat is run by Maggie (Faith McDevitt), another lesbian. Other women of the retreat vary in background, one "housewife," a "straight" romance novelist from the south, and a "cosmic" spiritualist. If this had been a heterosexually-oriented love story, it would be mildly entertaining with humorous, odd-couple flirtation scenes. For the alternative-choosing crowd, it may still be entertaining.
The message is blatant: lesbianism is superior to heterosexual orientation and men are incapable of true intimacy. Devoid of brute force, men become pathetic, to be pitied. Even straight women don't know how to hug one another. Claire believes "whatever feels good is right." Despite her "straight" orientation, proven through scenes of graphic heterosexual intercourse, Claire seems to initiate the relationship with Noel. Illustrating that women can be as coarse as men, the dialogue contains numerous obscenities and profanities. Males take a not-so-subtle beating when the "housewife's" husband leaves her, apparently unable to cope with taking care of the children. Many comments and flirtations seem to require alcohol to encourage these women. For a "woman's film," this one is very unlady-like.
