The Spice Girls, five vivacious young British women who formed a pop singing and dancing group in 1993, have been taking the world wide music scene by storm. So, naturally, they have made a fast- paced, action-packed musical comedy which features them (Melanie Brown, Emma Bunton, Melanie Chisholm, Geri Halliwell, Victoria Adams) and their music. It takes place in and around London and shows them traveling to various sites where they sing and dance in rehearsals and performances. But its not all work as they get involved in all sorts of fun, sometimes bizarre events. They fly to Italy to perform, take dancing lessons, go on a wild boat ride, visit with some fantasy UFO aliens and comfort a friend as she has a baby. All this is accompanied by lots of very energetic, somewhat sexy, song and dance numbers in their inimitable style.
This film is obviously made to appeal to young girls, primarily those about 14 or younger. The comedy is often corny and slapstick, but the girls will probably love it. Overall, this film has virtually no seriously offensive foul language or sexual content. But it has plenty of mild sexually suggestive content including some of the girls almost continuously wearing low cut tops with lots of cleavage shown. And the girls' movements during their musical performances are always slightly suggestive. In one song and dance number with some Italian male dancers, the men wear pants with no seats revealing complete buttocks nudity. It's difficult to understand the lyrics in their songs, but some of the songs performed, such as "Wannabee" and "2 Become 1," do have favorable references to promiscuous sex. And young girls will emulate the Spice Girls and purchase their tapes and CD's which sometimes are sexually suggestive. Some scenes showing the girls' pregnant friend going through pre-birth contractions and birth itself may not be appropriate for very young children. Even though SPICE WORLD is a fast moving, fun film, it's too sexually suggestive, particularly with its cleavage and rear male nudity, to be recommendable to its targeted youthful audience.
