When an armored transport carrying three million dollars gets caught in a flood zone, in an evacuated town in Indiana, Tom, (Christian Slater) is left as the last line of defense. He must battle a gang of looters led by Jim, (Morgan Freeman) as well as the rising flood waters soon to submerge the entire town. Caught in some unthinkable situations, Tom finds help in the unlikely hands of a local townswoman, Karen (Minnie Driver). The two forge a bond and, as the town becomes covered with water, they must evade looters and survive high speed boat chases. The movie takes a twist when greed overtakes the Sheriff (Dennis Quaid), who becomes entangled in the race to recover the lost money. This "Die-Hard" action thriller in motor boats is sure to keep the heart pumping and leave the viewer gasping for air.

Unfortunately, that is not the only reason the viewer will be gasping. With over 28 obscenities and 18 profanities, HARD RAIN is hard to listen to. In addition, much of the violence in this film takes place inside a church. Tom is struck in the head with a crucifix. He later remarks that he saw Jesus. Jim also flippantly uses the Lord's name and even says the Lord knows he should kill the Sheriff. Many violent scenes occur with gunfire. One man is shot in the eye, another is shot in the shoulder. In addition, Karen is hit in the head and then later handcuffed to be raped by a deputy, once again portraying law enforcement in a negative light. In addition, several crude sexually suggestive comments are made regarding Karen by the deputies. All in all HARD RAIN is a great action movie. It's just ruined by the flood of violence and obscenities.
