Ernest Rides Again

If you're a fan of the slapstick comedy antics of Ernest P. Worrell (Jim Varney), you'll probably enjoy this latest in the ERNEST sequels. This time around, Ernest is out to discover the secret hiding place of the crown jewels of England. He's aided by a mousy professor of history named Abner Melon (Ron Jones). The professor is convinced that the jewels of England have been hidden in an old cannon used in Virginia during the American Revolutionary War. As they search, Ernest finds himself astride the huge cannon being mysteriously propelled on a wild ride over hill and dale, highway and byway. Some bad guys and British agents are in hot pursuit. However, the most clever humor comes in Ernest's impersonations and dialogue mimicking make believe events. Admittedly, all this action is rather "dumb" slapstick, but it will likely appeal to the under 17 set. A short cartoon feature entitled MR. BILL GOES TO WASHINGTON precedes the main show and is obviously designed for the very young.

Typical of these movies, Ernest is subject to numerous comical mishaps. Among other things, part of a frame structure of a house falls on him, he is chased by a power saw, has nails shot at him and is struck in the head by a boomerang. He's shot at, roughed up, and caught in the mouth by a fishhook. All this mayhem has a good natured flavor and is not sadistic or gory. Throughout their adventure, Ernest and Abner enjoy a genuine but strained camaraderie and loyalty. Happily, the film contains no foul language or sexual content. Are all the violent antics in ERNEST movies excessive? One could make a good argument that they are, but we are inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt.
