Autumn In New York

MPAA Rating: PG-13

Entertainment: +2 1/2

Restaurant owner Will Keane (Richard Gere), a womanizing bachelor in New York, has never had a serious relationship. And doesnt mean to start now. He sees Charlotte Fielding (Winona Ryder) as another conquest, even if she is less than half his 48 years. But the unpredictable happens as he finds himself falling in love. As hes about to give his heart away, he discovers hers has a life-threatening defect. However, she insists in living every moment with gusto and love. And try as he might, Will cant return to life as he knew it. Romance fans of tear-jerkers like LOVE STORY and TERMS OF ENDEARMENT will enjoy this well-done, but predictable plot.

Many comments are made about Wills womanizing past, and at least one piece comes back to haunt him. A child he fathered, but only saw in photographs, returns to try and connect with the father she only knew by name. Charlotte defines a womanizer as a man who has sex with many women but commits to none and is good at lying. Several scenes imply pre-marital sex with the couple in bed. One scene strongly implies the act but any definite images are obscured. Rough language is used infrequently, but several obscenities and moderate crudities mar the dialogue. As he learns what love truly is, Will learns to accept responsibility for both past and present relationships. But the endorsement of premarital sexual relations and vulgarities put a chill on AUTUMN IN NEW YORK.
